Toby
Lovell
"There are only two or three people in the
country that can actually play like that." MARTIN BOLAND |
|
Toby Lovell does not strike you as a hardcore blues
harpist, with his calm, rural English persona - and love of farming
pigs, ducklings and Cider making - you would be surprised that he
has been described as the illegitimate love child of Muddy Waters.
Martin Boland of the Royal Oak has said of Toby "...there are
only two or three people in the country that can play like that."
He is also the featured artist on episode 4 of The Garden Sessions
Podcast - and one of the organisers of the Ross-on-Wye Cider Festival
featured in episode 12...

Police
& High Sherrif Riding Down
(3 Mb / 3:14)
A song which was recorded
in 1928 by a talent scout from New York, whilst travelling
through the southern states. This song in particular was recorded
in Alabama State Penitentiary - by Hollis Martin, and is the
only song he ever recorded, indeed nothing else is known about
him by folk historians (even Dave Gimble doesn't have a clue).

Peach
Tree (2.1 Mb /
2:13)
First sung by Sonny Boy Williamson
II, originally performed with full band backing - Toby arranged
this song for the blues harp, and I suspect you'll agree that
it works rather well. |
