When you think of couples performing folk music together, it is hard to avoid conjuring up images of "Keith" and "Candice Marie" in that old BBC play 'Nuts In May'. This is not the case however, with Claire Mann and Aaron Jones - indeed their album 'Secret Orders' is one of the best kept secrets in folk music. The subtle fusion between Jones' masterful bouzouki licks and Mann's beautifully flowing whistle and flute gives their performance a distinct sound; elevating the instrumental sets to something akin to a small journey, whilst the duo's grasp on traditional song is second to none.
Die hard fans of Claire and Aaron would be glad to hear performances of the likes of 'Across The Western Ocean' and David Francey's 'Saints and Sinners'. These are two songs which they have very much made their own, but more than any other, they embody the best of Mann and Jones; the soaring and emotionally charged harmonies combine to create unrivaled and deeply soulful performances. When watching Claire Mann and Aaron Jones, I think the thing which shines through most is their complete lack of ego. Indeed it is their forthrightly honest approach to the music they perform (and their desire to share it with the audience) which ultimately seals the deal with regards this duo's musical integrity. I make no bones about it when I say that Claire Mann and Aaron Jones are the best duo on the Folk scene today. Period.
