The Poozies: Ed Fest 2008 **** Print E-mail
Although the famous speigeltent has lost some of its slick, jazzy atmostphere since the smoking ban, the Poozies filled it up with a wonderful variety of tunes and songs. Along with their traditional songs they sang some of Sally Barker's own. They are refreshingly experimental in their mixing of traditional and modern styles. Though they sing gaelic mouth music, and old waulking songs they use plastic cucumber and cabbage shakers for percussion.

The audience were lively in their chorus singing and clapping, though it was disappointing not to see more young people there. The Poozies are an upbeat band of five women, who allow or individualism and banter on stage. They occassionally dealt out a jazzy number. My own favourite song was 'Black Eyed Susan', an acappella number by American singer Laura Viers. It was lovely hearing such a funky song sung in a Scottish accent- so commonly people opt for an American twang, especially when singing about the Texan desert. It is also a song which fills out in its choruses with beautiful harmonies. The Poozies are good at those.

They saved another lovely acapella song for the encore, it was an uplifting gospel-like ending: 'There's another train, there always is, maybe the next one is yours' ...and you can get it to the next Poozies gig.
