Elbow Jane: Edinburgh Folk Club 2009 ** Print E-mail

Before the advent of television franchises like ‘X Factor’ and ‘Pop Idol’, newly created boy bands were introduced to their prospective fans through a rigorous string of school performances, where a carefully honed and heavily packaged product was foisted upon its target audience of teenage girls.  ‘Elbow Jane’s appearance at Edinburgh Folk Club was reminiscent of this, albeit aimed at the opposite end of the age spectrum – a calculatedly over packaged and sickly sweet marketing machine.

The terms "folk fusion" or "acid croft" are often liberally used in an effort to categorise Shooglenifty's music.  Both fall short of describing a unique collaboration of traditional and contemporary instruments with influences as diverse as the Balkans to the Carribbean.  Constant global roaming appears to have influenced the band as they have absorbed the essence of musical sounds from around the world and distilled them into a heady mix of sound.
