Review by Frank Burkitt
Apart from a brief moment when Lori stops
singing to finish off some welding (end of 3 riddles), this
album is a joy from start to finish. The original fiddle
playing and energetic guitar kept my foot tapping through
the instrumental numbers whilst Lori Watson’s beautiful
voice seemed to effortlessly entertain.
Tracks such as ‘Capon’, ‘Treaty’
and ‘Euro’ stand out specifically. They bend
the original folkie style and create a far more interesting
and complex sound than your average Ceilidh trio. This was
such a joy as I have regularly found myself sent into a
trance by average jigs and reels! No offence Sandy Bells!
‘When Maggie Gangs Away’ is
probably my favourite on the album. It has of late become
my soundtrack for wondering to work through the city, singing
along whilst at the same time willing winter to ‘gang
away’ and make way for spring. I believe this album
should be a soundtrack for many people and it saddens me
that neither HMV nor Virgin display it in there high street
windows! But maybe that wouldn’t be so good after
all. As long as the Lori Watson Three keep producing albums
like this one, I’ll go to any length to find it.
