Review by Tom Harland
Karine's much anticipated last gig at Celtic
Connections before taking time out until September to have
a (hopefully folkie) baby was no dissapointment. Held in
the inspiring Old Fruitmarket venue, Karine was on dazzling
form, playing a range of songs including some from her new
album 'Scribbled In Chalk'.
The soaring harmonies supplied by her brother
Steven and accordianist Inge Thompson complemented Karine's
haunting voice to spine tingling effect - especially during
exquisitley timed breaks from the music. Driving percussion
and bass from Mattie Foulds and Kevin McGuire completed
what has become a fine balance between folk and rock to
delight a younger crowd. Karine's engaging stage presence
was both warm and funny, and she revelled in getting the
audience involved in the music. especially on her jaunty
last sing-a-long number.
My personal highlight was a beautifully
executed version of 'Maid o' the Loch' which Karine will
hopefully be recording at some point. September can't come
fast enough!
