| Every
year, the population of Scotland's capital city doubles,
as visitors from every corner of the globe descend on Edinburgh
for the world's largest arts festival. Last year saw 28,014
performances of 1,867 shows in 261 venues. This year's programme
has been released and (as ever) there is plenty to see.
Whilst music might tend to take up only 21% of the festival's
content - at the Fringe, that's still a lot of shows.
Folkwise this year, look
out for: Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy, Malinky, Old Blind
Dogs, Lori Watson 3, Deaf
Shepherd, Burach, Lau & loads more at the acoustic music
centre (St. Brides), Kim Edgar at the Lot (Grassmarket)
& Eddie Reader at the Queen's Hall (Clerk St). The Garden
Sessions very own Frank Burkitt
will also be performing at this year's festival 12 - 18
August (5pm) at Music Live@Euroscot (Haymarket).
Festival Folk at the Oak
(Infirmary St.) Running now for over a decade and promising
a staggering 34 acts over the course of the festival featuring
performances from Nick Keir,
former Garden Sessions featured artist Martin
Boland, Ian Bruce, former Garden Sessions number 1 Jim
Malcolm, Paul McKenna
& Ubesky Brod, Steve Byrne & Alastair McDonald.
And - with later opening hours, The Royal Oak tends to be
the late night place to be for folkies & musicians throughout
the festival.

bring you full coverage of the folk & traditional elements
