PRESENTERS BLOG:  Eberhard "Paddy" Bort

Welcome to the Clubhouse – Paddy Bort’s monthly round-up of what’s on at Scottish folk clubs – the discerning ‘Clubber’s Guide’, as it were. The Clubhouse won’t manage to be absolutely comprehensive in its covering of dates, but it aims at being as inclusive as possible. Organisers up and down the country, please send your forthcoming concerts and activities to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Paddy Bort arrived  to Edinburgh in 1995 – in his ‘other life’ he works with the Institute of Governance at the University of Edinburgh. He is originally from Germany, still has a hand in organising the music for The Phoenix in Lauffen in the south of Germany. He studied at Tübingen University and, before Edinburgh, taught at Trinity College Dublin and at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington State.

Since 1999, he has been involved in organising (for his sins) not just one, but two folk clubs in the Capital. The Wee Folk Club at the Royal Oak celebrated its tenth anniversary in May 2009 and was voted Folk Club of the Year in the Scots Trad Awards of December 2008. Edinburgh Folk Club, founded in 1973, and for the past decade and a half located at the Pleasance, was voted British Folk Club of the Year in the BBC2 Folk Awards of 2003.

The first Clubhouse instalment, for August ’09, concentrates on the Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, with an abundance of highly attractive concerts, at the Acoustic Music Centre, the Queen’s Hall and the Royal Oak, as well as a number of other venues. Not all folk clubs, though, go into hibernation in July and August, Leith Folk Club and the Star in Glasgow, to name but two, are carrying on throughout what passes as ‘summer’ in these parts.
