For the first time since it's creation in the late 50's, The Edinburgh University Folk Society have made a decision to move operations to Edinburgh's Royal Oak. The Royal Oak has been a standard bearer for the folk scene inside (and out) of Edinburgh, so it seems only fitting that it's opened it's doors to some of Edinburgh's finest young traditional musicians.

After much discussion and deliberation, the Folk Society met for the first time in the Royal Oak on Tuesday 20th March to begin a trial seperation from it's home in the Pleasence. By all accounts the evening went very well, but as yet - the Garden Sessions cannot confirm whether any permenant decision has been taken.

The society was formed as the "Edinburgh University Folk Song Society" in the late 1950s and had it's initial meeting on the 18th of April 1958. Since then it has played an important role in the Folk Revival throughout the 1960s and 1970s and organised Ceilidhs, Concerts and a Folk Festival in 1963.

The "Edinburgh University Folk Song Society" was renamed "Edinburgh University Folk Society" to reflect the high proportion of instrumentalists and instrumental music involved. Today it consists of 10-15 student members and at least as many non-student members.
