Former Garden Sessions featured artist and occasional contributor (interviewing Nizlopi and Houghmagandhi) Carolyn Anona Scott has scooped the prestigious top prize at this year's Royal Oak Songwriting Competition after wowing judges Eberhart "Paddy" Bort, Tom Fairnie and David Ferrard with the touching tribute to her grandmother 'Old Tea Stains'.

Anona Scott is a singer/songwriter living and working in Edinburgh. A regular gigger around town, and compere at many acoustic showcases for 'Never Ending Arts' - a project aimed at revolutionising Edinburgh's arts scene through gig promotions and the likes, Carolyn also dedicates any spare time to community arts projects and enjoys getting involved in pretty much anything creative. She was the Garden Sessions featured artist on episode 27 of our fortnightly internet radio show (or Podcast).

Royal Oak Folkathon raises £800 for Sick Kids Print E-mail

Edinburgh's "Grand Ole' Opry Of Folk" - The Royal Oak, held it's annual Folkathon in aid of Edinburgh Sick Kids Hospital. The event began at noon, with Fife folk legend Andy Chung, and ended at 2am with "The Royal Oak Bunch" (Alan Hunter, Martin Boland & The Bothy Collective).

The Garden Sessions spoke to organiser Ivor Birnie, who told us "there's been a good response from people, lots of artists wanting to play..." "...I've done it for the Sick Kids every year, it's especially good now that [Deputy First Minister] Nicola Sturgeon has announced that the hospital will be staying there and not getting shut down, people of Edinburgh were delighted to hear that news."

The event raised over £800 this year, which is double last year's total. Ivor told us "it's been good fun, though it's hard work getting it organised... musicians are musicians, they're not under the kosh"

Drever, Woomble and McCusker collaborate Print E-mail

Kris Drever, Roddy Woomble and John McCusker have been in the studio to record an exciting new album, their first together. All new material written especially for the album.

Drever's debut solo album 'BlackWater' was produced by John McCusker and features Kris with friends Ewen Vernal, Kate Rusby, Donald Shaw, Andy Seward, Andy Cutting, Roddy Woomble, Eddi Reader, Andy Cutting and Andy Seward.

Born in 1976 in the west of Scotland, Roddy Woomble travelled extensively through his childhood, living in France and the United States before settling in Edinburgh to study photography, where he met his Idlewild band mates. After stints in both London and New York City, Roddy now lives in Glasgow.

John McCusker was a member of the Battlefield Band for 11 years and by the time he left he was one of the top traditional musicians in the land, also composing a rich fund of original tunes. McCusker also guested on albums with many musicians including Teenage Fanclub, Danny Thompson, Eddi Reader, Tim O'Brien and Linda Thompson. By then he was already involved with folk singer Kate Rusby. He joined her band, became her producer and married in August 2001. They later divorced.

Due out on Tom Reveal's new folk label NAVIGATOR in Spring. Keep your eyes peeled for tour dates a single and some free promotional goodies for before too long!
