Royal Oak's Wee Folk Club wins Scots Trad Music Award Print E-mail

The jewel in the Royal Oak's folkie crown, and associate of the Folkie News - The Wee Folk Club has scooped 'Folk Club Of The Year' at this year's TradMusic Awards.

The folk club, which must surely be a contender for smallest in Scotland (if not the UK), is run by Eberhart "Paddy" Bort - and is in essence the sister club to 'Festival Folk at The Oak' which was origionally launched by Bort and the late Bobby Eaglesham of 'Five Hand Reel'.

Eberhart Bort and Heather MacKenzie, the Oak's Landlady (both pictured above) attended the ceremony on Saturday 6th December. Bort said his initial response was surprise, but was pleased the club had achieved such recognition - "the Wee Folk Club is a stage for up and coming peformers, and is often their first show in front of an audience".

As well as less well known names though, the 30 seat venue has played host to the likes of Jim Malcolm, Brian McNeil and the legendary Dick Gaughan.

In other categories, Duncan Chisholm's 'Farrar' took Album of The Year, Margaret Stewart - Gaelic Singer Of The Year, Instrumentalist of the Year was Kris Drever and 'The Chair' took Scottish Folk Band Of The Year.
