Alistair Hulett (d. Jan 28th 2010) Print E-mail

One of the best performances of the Festival Folk at the Oak 2009 was from the wonderful, amusing, and passionate, Alistair Hulett, and it is with great regret that we inform you of the loss of this true wonder of the folk world....But we know that his music, words and his fight for a better world will live on and will inspire others to carry on his work and beliefs.

Kirsty-Jacqueline Lingard

From his official website:

It is with overwhelming sadness I write to report the death of Alistair Hulett – singer, songwriter, international socialist, revolutionary, ecologist, community activist and my partner and best friend of 17 years.

Alistair died on Thursday evening, January 28 at 6:30pm at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. Many friends have been shocked by the severity and speed of his deterioration, none more so than myself.

Alistair became ill very suddenly on New Year's Day and was hospitalised on January 5 with suspected food poisoning. Liver failure was later diagnosed and it was hoped that he could receive a liver transplant, but further investigation revealed a very aggressive form of cancer which had already spread from his liver to his lungs and stomach. Alistair died peacefully only days after the cancer was first detected.

Alistair was a kind, gentle man who was committed to fighting for a better world – a world based on the principles of justice, equality, love and respect for all of humanity. The world was a better place for knowing him and is a sadder place for his loss. He leaves a great legacy in his music that will continue to bring inspiration to many who, like him, believed a better world was possible.

Mike Vass...Super String Theory...Celtic Connections Print E-mail

Mike Vass. Super String Theory, New Voices

Look out for Nairn boy Mike Vass at Celtic Connections. This well known face from Edinburgh Sessions will be performing his New Voices commission on Sunday Jan 24th 2010, at 1pm in the Strathclyde suite of the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow.

'A current favourite among scientists in search of an all- encompassing hypothesis is super string theory, according to which elementary particles are likened to the notes sounded by a violin string under varying tension. Acclaimed young fiddler Mike Vass co-opts this concept with poetic licence for his New Voices premiere, which seeks to unite the disparate elements of his own creative universe in cahoots with some of his favourite musicians. Within an eight-piece line-up including his pianist sister Ali, piper Calum MacCrimmon and multi-instrumentalist Anna Massie – with everyone also enlisted on vocals – each individual’s response to Vass’s written parts will feed integrally into the performance.' (Sue Wilson)

Musically Featuring ~

Ali Vass: Piano, Vocals
Anna Massie: Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin, Vocals
Dave Wood: Guitar, Bouzouki, Vocals
Calum MacCrimmon: Whistle, Bagpipes, Vocals
Megan Henderson: Accordion, Fiddle, Vocals
Stevie Fyvie: Percussion, Vocals
Mike Vass: Fiddle, Guitar, Vocals
James Lindsay: Bass

Waking Life

Man’s Search for Meaning
